When Growth Becomes Invisible — But Real
At some point in life, achievements become silent.
No big announcements.
No showing off
No obvious indications of progress.
As an outsider, it might seem that nothing is happening. However, there is something great going indoors.
This is the stage of growth that cannot be observed, yet it is highly concrete.
We often desire growth to manifest itself in dramatic ways. A new job. A new title. A visible success. We are made to measure order of improvement by outcomes that can be observed by others. Then, when we do not get such results, we begin to doubt ourselves.
We ask questions such as, am I stuck, am I wasting time?
At one point in life, I felt lifeless. My routine was the same. My goals felt far away. Nothing exciting was happening to be announced. It was not very comfortable, as though I was falling behind.
However, gradually, I realized that there were indirect transformations that were occurring in me.
I was reacting less.
I was listening more.
My learning was on letting go rather than holding on.
Nobody was paying any attention to these changes, yet they existed.
One quote that explains this phase perfectly well is as follows:
“Not everything grows on the surface, and not everything that is growing is audible.”
This invisible growth usually occurs as one is recovering. When you are unlearning all those habits that are no longer useful. As you are restoring yourself, without attention or approval.
This form of personal development is real but quiet.
The same way roots are developed underground and then a tree is developed on top, inner growth occurs silently. In the absence of this phase, this success would not be visible.
So you are not wasting time; you are just getting ready.
Unannounced growth makes us patient. It teaches you to show up for yourself, even when nobody is on the lookout.
It is not an easy phase. It can feel lonely. It is capable of confusing your course. It is, however, one of the most significant steps of personal development.
In the period when you are growing invisibly, you are acquiring emotional strength. You are increasingly becoming conscious of your habits. You are learning what is really important to you.
It is at this point that you quit pursuing it all.
It is at this point that you quit trying to prove yourself.
It is the beginning when you get much closer to yourself.
The growth is seen once again one day. People will notice your calm. Your confidence. Your clarity. These will be referred to as sudden growth or overnight change.
They will not know about the silent labor you did when nothing appeared to be going on.
So on times when you think you are not moving forward, you are far behind in race, take your time. Do not compare yourself with other people. Do not devalue what is taking place in you.
You are not stuck.
You are not failing.
You are changing in a manner that will be significant throughout your life.
Still, invisible growth is growth.
And when it at last surfaces in reality, it will be powerful, steady, and factual.
